Playgo! allowance app logo

Design Brief

Create a responsive web app that allows parents to pay their children allowance, or for chores, and allows kids to shop, transfer money, and more without a debit or credit card or the need to visit a physical bank or store.

The app needs to:

  • Be secure

  • Allow users to transfer money

  • Allow users to view spending history

Competitive Analysis

I performed competitive analyses on GoHenry and Greenlight, two allowance apps in the market.

  • GoHenry: simple but smaller. Bigger in Britain than US. not great social media.

  • Greenlight: complex but very popular. Good social media.

Problem: Parents of kids ages 9-16 want to pay an allowance, but feel frustration when they repeatedly forget.
Solution: an app where parents can schedule a child’s allowance will ease frustration and streamline parents’ busy lives.

User Stories

“As a parent, I want an overview of the features of the app, so I can learn how to use it.”

“As a parent, I want to search my childrens’ purchases, so I can monitor and review what they purchase.”

“As a user, I want a secure way to create an account on this app, so I can feel that my information and finances are secure.”

“As a parent, I want to schedule allowance payments, so I don’t forget to pay my child their allowance.”

Usability Testing

  • Goals

To test how easily users can find, access, and complete tasks related to three functional requirements:

    Allowance scheduling

    Two factor authentication

Search through and filter past spending

  • Test Objectives

Can the user successfully schedule a weekly transfer of money
    to a hypothetical child?

Can the user successfully view spending history for a specific child?

Can the user log in to the app using two factor authentication?

  • Methods

    5 studies moderated remotely

    1 study moderated in-person

Moderator was present for all studies

Each participant was in a quiet space

Each test ran between 15 and 40 minutes

  • Participants

    6 participants

    Age ranges 40-75

Two were male and 4 were female

    All but one were parents

Users were unable to find spending history

  • Problem & Evidence

At least 4 of the 6 participants  do not like how spending history is under help ("Why would that be under help?" "I would click on help which is stupid. I hate this."), and two participants couldn’t find it at all.

  • Solution

Create a link to spending history in a prominent place on the launchpad of the app (easy fix).
